National Mass Education Commission Abuja has presented a meritorious award to Governor Badaru Abubakar for his outstanding contribution to education especially in the non formal mass literacy sector in the state.
While presenting the award to the Governor at the 2022 International Literacy Day celebration held in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Akpama Simon Ibor and the representative of Minister of Education, Mrs. Pious Adewake congratulated Governor Badaru and the entire people of the State for been selected among the two states in the country that perform wonderfully towards the improvement of mass literacy in their states.
According to the Director Literacy of the Commission, Dr John O. Edeh while reading the profile of Jigawa State Agency for Mass Education and what the Governor Badaru has done in the sector, said, the Commission was fully convinced to select Jigawa State and the Governor for the award in the subject of adult and youth literacy in the country.
The Commission then commended the State Governor and the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Lawan Yunusa Danzomo for providing an enabling environment for outstanding performance to the State Agency for Mass Education which brought a great honor to the State and the Governor in the country.
In his response while receiving the award on behalf of Jigawa State Governor, the Executive Secretary, Jigawa State Agency for Mass Education, Dr. Abbas A. Abbas thanked the NMEC for finding the State and the Governor worthy for the award. He reassured the Commission that, the State Government will maintain the tempo.
Dr. Abbas told the Commission that, from the year 2015 to date, the State Government has succeeded in the re-activation and revitalization of education sector in the State.
He further highlighted some of achievements recorded by the administration of Badaru Abubakar in mass education which include general improvement of adult education in the State, training of 6,500 facilitators of all programmes of the agency as well as the establishment of 390 Remedial centers and 174 Continuing Centers across the State where about 223,050 youths were trained.
Other achievements of the Badaru administration in mass education according to Dr. Abbas include the establishment of 783 Basic Literacy Centers and 495 Post Literacy Centers where over 369 adults learners were made literate and the establishment of 216 Women Functional and Vocational Centers where over 26,000 women in purdah divorcees and widows benefitted.
He further stated that, the present administration has established 153 literacy by Radio Centers and distributed 5,050 Solar Powered Radio to the learners across the State.
In terms of training, the Executive Secretary of the Agency said, the Jigawa State Government through the Agency for Mass Education has conducted an extra coaching for the SS3 final year students on Mathematics and English Language and also trained 8,791 teachers of Senior Secondary Schools in the State on critical areas of external education among others.
